I often worry about my children and grandchildren who live far away from me. I feel guilty that I am not there to help them in their times of need. In particularly, my son and his wife have four children. The last little girl was born with spina bifida. We are grateful to have her in our family and she has taught us so much. Little Lily Ruth cannot feel her legs nor will she ever be able to walk unless a miracle happens. She looks outwardly like all children since she has received excellent care at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Lily Ruth had two surgeries right after her birth. The first was to close the opening in her back where her spine projected. Then they had to insert a shunt into her head that empties into her stomach to keep the fluid from building up and causing problems with her brain. She wore casts and braces on her legs for the first several months of her life day and night, and now only has to wear braces at night. Her feet have straightened out so they look very normal. Her mother has to catheterize her every four hours all day because she is unable to void on her own.

I traveled a couple of times to Utah to help with Lily and my other children when she was small to give them a little relief. Because my son, Lily’s father, travels quite a bit with his work, he is not always able to be there to give his wife the support she needs. However, I am consoled by the fact that I know she has the Relief Society sisters in our church there to help her.

One lady in her ward (unit of the LDS church) offered to take the baby one morning a week to give her a rest. When the baby was first born, the ladies in the ward took meals over to the family for a week so they didn’t have to worry about fixing food. The meals were well planned and nutritional. The food lasted well over a week. The other children in the family are seven, five and two years of age. The Relief Society also scheduled young women in the ward to take the older children to play once a week at the local playground.

I am grateful to belong to the oldest Women’s Organization in the world. I feel that this organization is much more than just a club or clique.

Who Participates in Relief Society?

All women 18 years of age and older, as well as women younger than 18 who are married or are single mothers, are welcomed into the sisterhood of Relief Society. There are approximately 6 million sisters in Relief Society. Since its organization on March 17, 1842, by the Prophet Joseph Smith, Relief Society has spread throughout the world into nearly 170 countries.

Our Motto

“Charity Never Faileth” stems from the first Relief Society meeting. The sisters were asked by the Prophet Joseph Smith to assist the brethren “in looking to the wants of the poor-searching after objects of charity, and in administering to their wants.” The sisters took this call to heart and became a society devoted to seeking out the poor and needy. (See Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2007], 452.)

“On 17 March 1842 the Prophet Joseph Smith organized the Relief Society-the Lord’s organization for women. Relief Society is important to the Lord. I know that. He provided women a safe haven from the harshness of the world when He gave us Relief Society. From the beginning our association together and our direction from priesthood leaders have helped us come unto Christ. There was no greater cause then; there is no greater cause today.

Much humanitarian service is given to people of all walks of life through the Relief Society. I have learned so much from this society and wanted to share it with all.

30. March 2012 · Comments Off on Fun Birthday Gift Idea · Categories: Shopping And Product Reviews · Tags: , ,

If you never know what to get a certain someone for their birthday try this fun birthday gift idea: get them a gift for every year of their life. I know, at first glance it sounds complicated, it sounds expensive but it really doesn’t have to be. The result is a pile of gifts the recipient will never forget. There are not many fun birthday gift ideas that result in more joy than this one.

The idea is to get a gift for every year of their life that represents that year in some way. Wrapping each gift individually and explaining them as you go makes for an evening of fun. Here’s an example for a guy who’s turning 20:

Year 1: Baby card filling him in on what is to come.
Year 2: Phrase fridge magnets for when he learned to talk.
Year 3: Find his old baby blanket or favorite toy when he was three.
Year 4: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action figure. His favorite hero of the time.
Year 5: A pen set to signify his first day of school.
Year 6: A soccer ball because he played soccer.
Year 7: Tabletop pizza cooker for his favorite food then and now.
Year 8: A gross gag gift to show off the potty humor of an 8 year old.
Year 9: Sheet music to commemorate his first guitar lesson.
Year 10: “Simon Says” hand held game. A favorite as a child.
Year 11: Cookie in the shape of his 6th grade GPA.
Year 12: Will Smith CD, with his favorite song of that year.
Year 13: Mickey Mouse ears to remember the trip to Disneyland.
Year 14: Bag of taffy and caramels for the year his braces were removed.
Year 15: New climbing harness to show the year he took up sport climbing.
Year 16: Model car much like his first car.
Year 17: Coffee cup to signify that he met his first serious girlfriend in a coffee shop.
Year 18: Scratch off lottery tickets.
Year 19: G.I. Joe because this is the year he joined the military.
Year 20: A graphic tee shirt he’s been wanting.

As you search for presents, keep in mind important things that happened in this person’s life as well as important world events. Did your dad see the first moon landing? Incorporate that. Did he break his leg skiing in ’82? Add something for that. This birthday gift idea is less about the individual gifts and more about the fact that you are showing the recipient you love them and you actually did listen to all those stories they’ve told you.

Be sure to really mix the gifts up as well. Give them a few things that are good for laughs and a few things that they will really like. Also, don’t forget the nostalgic touches. Anything you can find from their childhood and youth is a huge bonus. Their old baby blanket, their first report card, an old drawing, these things are often the most special.

This idea works really well for anyone 13 or older. The older the recipient the more practical it may be to incorporate others in the giving. Siblings, aunts, cousins, parents and friends can all help put this together. Delegate a set of years to each person and head to the mall or set out online. You’ll find that not only will the birthday boy/girl enjoy their day; you will also really enjoy putting the whole thing together.

Moms and dads, brothers and sisters, grandparents, boyfriends, girlfriends, older children, everyone loves getting this sort of gift. The laughs are contagious and the joy someone gets in their eye when they see a pile of gifts, all for them, has a certain whimsical mystique that will be embedded in your memory forever.

29. March 2012 · Comments Off on Animals and Birds Should be Cage Free · Categories: Pets · Tags: , ,

It probably began in the past when man began to understand the beauty of animals. Coupled with his power over them, he probably decided that he wanted to have the beautiful animals that he had encountered on his hunting trips to be near him. Through the centuries, man has domesticated quite a few animals to serve his needs, and sometimes to serve no need at all. It is one thing to keep an animal nearby to serve one’s needs but it is cruel to want to keep them ‘just for fun’. Hence, keeping animals and birds in cages is quite ridiculous if not cruel.

It is most definitely cruel to keep any animal or bird in captivity; worse still confined in cages. An animal or bird is so carefree in its own environment. It knows of no restrictions. It goes about its own business of eating and drinking and creating babies. Even domestic animals would like to walk about and act according to their instincts and desires. Caging them would deprive them of this. How often have we seen caged animals pacing their cages in futile attempts to escape? Can we imagine the frustration that they feel? What do we get in making a creature furious, frustrated and depressed? Yet humans do it all the time. Since we would think it cruel if someone were to cage us, it stands to reason that we should not do it to others, even animals and birds. The sense of justice we hold so dear when it comes to humans should be extended to all living creatures.

Besides being cruel, it serves little purpose to want to cage animals and birds. Wild animals and birds being caged up serve our egoistic pleasure of power over others and that’s about all that we do. Cultivating such natures does not do us any good; actually developing such natures will make us cruel and egoistic. Left in the wild a bird does all sorts of things; when kept in the cage, it just sits there. Granted that birds are beautiful to look at, we cannot observe the bird at its best when it is caged. To watch the bird at its best we should go to its habitat. Caging domestic animals just serves the purpose of controlling them. If we cannot look after them, why acquire them in the first place?

Finally, we have no right to do this; we do it because the creatures are powerless to prevent us from confronting them. If we are robbed of such rights, we would rather die than yield. Only in the cruelest of regimes are men and women confined only because the government – good or otherwise – feels that they are threats to their power or to the country. By what right then do we imprison animals and birds without any qualms?

Wild animals should be left free in their habitats and domestic animals should be given as much freedom as possible. The only reason for caging birds and animals is when they are a danger to themselves or to others. Nevertheless, wild animals and birds should never be captured in the first place.

24. March 2012 · Comments Off on Solar Powered Attic Fans – The How and Why Of Installing Them · Categories: Environment · Tags: , ,

When it comes to energy usage these days a lot of people are looking for alternative energy sources and as such solar power is very much coming into vogue. At its current level of technological evolution, solar power is a useful means of powering small engines to run simple devices. Fans are one such simple device and you will many instances where using a solar powered fan makes more sense than a fan powered by conventional means.

Many manufacturers now offer solar powered attic fans to ventilate and help keep attics cooler. If there is inadequate ventilation in the attic and poor sealing between the attic and the other rooms in the house, attic fans powered by electric means can potentially draw air from the house into the attic. Not only does this compromise energy efficiency but it can also increase the risk of moisture problems in the attic.

Solar powered fans rely on a small solar panel (typically 10 or 20 watt) to power a DC motor when the sun is shining. The fans are installed with intake vents to provide high-capacity powered ventilation without electric operating costs. Most vents are mounted high on the roof near the ridge and are combined with soffit or gable vents for balanced intake and exhaust air streams. Ventilation is only provided when there is ample sunshine to power the fan motor. The highest fan speed will tend to coincide with the greatest heat from the sun and consequently the greatest need for attic ventilation. By reducing attic temperature, attic fans can help reduce summertime cooling loads while at the same time providing ventilation without the added utility load.

Using solar energy to power air vents in your attic means you eliminate the need for electrical wiring in this part of the house and as a solar ventilator uses no electricity you are also avoiding any ongoing operating costs. You will find that the equipment costs for a solar powered attic fan are higher than those of a conventionally powered fan (around $200 more) but this will usually be offset by the money you save in not having to extend electrical wiring into the attic. In addition to attics you will also find solar powered fans used in greenhouses, outhouses, garages, sheds, out-buildings, and paint rooms.

Retail prices for solar powered attic fans range from about $350 to $600 depending on ventilation capacity, the manufacturer, and optional features such as a thermostat.

In instances of new construction, roofers will usually install powered ventilating units. If these units are solar powered roof vents there will be no need for an electrician to rough and finish wire the units. For retrofit projects, a roofer or do-it-yourselfer will be able to install a solar-powered attic fan using conventional tools and techniques.

Whilst not applicable in every instance where cooling is required, solar powered attic fans are an example of smart thinking utilizing a natural energy source.

18. March 2012 · Comments Off on How to Change Your Financial Behavior of Overspending · Categories: Finance · Tags: , ,

Everyone has to become accountable for our terrible financial behavior and wild money spending habits. What is really happening is that we’re piling up too much debt on our cell phones and living large with cruises, cars, clothes, cosmetics and liquor financed on our credit cards. Let’s look at 8 ways that can help you change your financial behavior:

– Admit your mistakes. We’ve all been shamed by some financed fiasco at some time when we’ve gotten scammed, overcharged or when we overspent on bad deals. Schools never taught you how to handle money in the first place so don’t beat yourself up about it.

– Get help. Get a second job and devote that money to bill payments.

– Teach yourself. Take a class, pick up a financial magazine, surf the financial web sites and change the channel to a business financial talk show. Teaching yourself won’t solve lifelong money problems but they will help you to start thinking about better ways to handle your money.

– Do some plastic cut up. Plan to pay off at least one or more credit cards with a large balance before the end of the year. Make a pledge to yourself, your loved ones, that you will free yourself of these plastic cards of voluntary slavery.

– Adjust your expectations. Quick fixes will not cure the habits of three generations groomed by buy now, pay later marketing. Plan on a three year turnaround period for new habits, mind-sets and results to make a complete change in your personal profitability.

– Turn book club into prosperity clubs. Share savings tips and credit card info, and help each other with the bailout of the leaky financial boat you’re all in. Remember, true sisterhood or brotherhood means we sink or survive together.

– Apply discipline to our institutions. Getting honest about managing our finances has to be a personal as well as an institutional matter if we want to be respected as responsible and accountable adults and organizations.

– Demand more financial education. Maybe more media solutions; radio stations and definitely daily saturation reports on our financial lifestyle and solutions is the only way to break through this blind spot.

To bring this to a close, you must become accountable and responsible for your actions when it comes to overspending financial behaviors. Being in debt can be very tough to overcome and it can linger with you for the rest of your life if you don’t think about making a change.

13. March 2012 · Comments Off on Eco Friendly Products and the Green Movement · Categories: Environment · Tags: , ,

Eco friendly products are goods and services that were manufactured with the idea that the process of producing and distributing them will not have a negative impact to the environment. Increasing awareness and concern for the environment has been affecting a lot of industries, with the “green” movement and ideals seeping into the collective consciousness of the buying public. There are many people who want to make a contribution, no matter how small, to protect the environment, which is actually a very good thing.

As a result of the public’s efforts to be more environmentally friendly, Eco friendly products can now be found everywhere from online stores to actual stores at the mall. To be called eco friendly, a product, such as clothes and accessories, must be made up of materials that were created and manufactured from organic materials. For example, cotton is the most predominantly used material for clothing. When growing cotton, the farmers sometimes used pesticides to protect the quality of the cotton. For eco friendly purposes, this has to be done away with. Pesticides should not be used in the production of cotton. The large-scale production and use of materials such as rayon has been a leading cause of environmental problems like deforestation. In keeping with the efforts of trying to maintain the ecological balance, several alternatives are being pursued to protect the environment. Chemicals, such as dye used for coloring the fabric, should also be scrapped. These chemicals are harmful to the environment and can also be detrimental to people’s health. If the fabrics and textiles made for manufacturing clothes can be produced without dyeing, thus eliminating the use of harmful chemicals, then it will be much better for the environment and the public. Moreover, the fabric should also be made to be more long lasting. If the clothes easily become old and worn out, disposing them can be an environmentally problematic option because these materials do not decompose easily. They will keep filling up garbage dumps and contribute to pollution and waste. Therefore, Eco friendly products must be made of strong and renewable materials. Recycling is also a considerable option. Clothes can either be made from recyclable plastic bottles and reusable fabrics. The above-mentioned processes may be small things compared to the wide-scale environmental issues but the tiniest things can have a huge impact if this is to be taken seriously. Fortunately, although the eco friendly production of cloth products and other accessories is still relatively new, it already has gained much popularity that even the most famous designers and fashion world’s who’s who are increasingly being swayed into promoting and supporting the go green movement.

However, protecting the environment is not the only objective of eco friendly campaigns. They also protect the rights of individuals for fair trade. Eco friendly products, besides being in most part organic, must also come from manufacturers that provide their workers with genuinely fair and decent working environment. They must be working in comfortable conditions and are being paid fair wages according to their hard work.

12. March 2012 · Comments Off on Baccarat Perfume Bottles · Categories: Shopping And Product Reviews · Tags: , ,

.25oz of Baccarat’s perfume Les Larmes Sacrées de Thebes costs over $1000.00 at Harrods in London. The expensive price is due to the Egyptian-style Baccarat crystal bottle and the frankincense and myrrh contained in the perfume.

Baccarat perfume bottles are just as popular with many collectors as the more famous Lalique. The French crystal company made many bottles for classic brands, such as Guerlain, Jean Patou, Elizabeth Arden and Lentheric. Like Lalique, the perfume bottles by Baccarat have their own mark.

Founded as long ago as 1764 when the French King Louis XV gave Bishop-Montmorency-Laval permission to build a glassworks in the village of Baccarat in eastern France, the crystal company has since gone from strength to strength. In 1816 it received its first crystal oven and started producing its glittering crystal. In 1896 the Russian Tsar, Nicholas II, gave the company his favor after being introduced to it in Paris. Baccarat contributed greatly to the splendor and elegance of the Russian court. According to an article at Dinnerware Matchers (dinnerwarematchers.com): “Candelabras, fountains, centerpieces, and luxurious stemware including a vodka glass, were specially designed for this market.”

The company started making its lovely perfume bottles in the late nineteenth century. This soon became a large part of the business. By 1907 Baccarat was producing 4000 bottles a day!

Jacques Guerlain was one of the first to realize that the bottle and presentation of the fragrance could be just as important to women as the scent itself. Many perfumes were designed around the perfume bottle and the name.

The first bottle Baccarat made for the company was for the fragrance Champs-Elysees in 1904. The bottle was in an unusual turtle shape. Other famous perfume bottles that Baccarat made for Guerlain included Mitsouko and Shalimar.

Matsouko was inspired by Claude Farrere’s novel, La Batoille, which was about a British officer fighting in the Russo-Japanese war of 1905 who fell in love with a Japanese woman called Matsouko. The bottle, with its inverted heart shaped stopper has a scroll design.

The Shalimar bottles are also Art Deco designs. Designed in the 1920’s and inspired by the fountains in oriental gardens, these bottles are even more beautiful than those for Matsouko. The stunning blue stopper was in the shape of an oriental fan.

Another famous perfume bottle made by Baccarat was for the fragrance, Miracle, by Lentheric. This was made of black crystal with gold dust in the glass, called ‘floating gold’. Other perfume bottles made by Baccarat include those for Jean Patou’s Joy, nicknamed ‘the most expensive perfume in the world’, and the Evening in Paris bottle.

Vintage perfume bottles made by Baccarat can be extremely expensive. Some cost thousands of dollars. Although Baccarat, called ‘the glassmaker of kings’, has even diverged into owning hotels, it still makes its extremely elegant perfume bottles. It is even possible to obtain a ‘bespoke’ perfume from Guerlain’s Paris boutique in its own Baccarat bottle.

If you’re looking for that special gift that will be treasured and remembered for someone who cherishes and values collectibles, consider collectible perfume bottles. This is just one example of many to pique your interest in collectibles available in the perfume/fragrance industry, provide you with background and educational information as well as a unique idea for a gift fit for any occasion for that special woman in your life.

06. March 2012 · Comments Off on 2007 Movies Set Costume Trends · Categories: Shopping And Product Reviews · Tags: , ,

Halloween is big business, and it begins long before pumpkins are carved and houses are decorated in October. Costume and decorating manufacturers such as Disguise and Rubies launch their new products well in advance of the season. Costume retailers must place their Halloween orders in the New Year, and therefore the suppliers have to know what is going to be a hit.

They look to the movie industry to see where trends are going and create costumes and accessories that fit the bill. Movie releases from 2007 will have a huge influence on costume trends for this year. Pirates will undoubtedly be the largest costume trend for the season. With the release of Pirates of the Caribbean – At World’s End this May, the 3rd instalment of the franchise, eye masks, swords and tri-corn hats will be in huge demand by retailers.

Other franchise instalments include Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Spiderman 3. Wizards and superheroes are always popular costumes, but the spring/summer releases of these movies it top of the mind for Halloween.

Another popular trend in dress-up and movies are zombies and the undead. There has been resurgence from the 70’s genre zombie horror movie and in 2007 we see zombie movie sequels including 28 Weeks Later, Day of the Dead and Resident Evil. Horror makeup, prosthetics and fake blood will be in high demand by retailers and consumers.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or TMNT is being released in March while a contemporary Nancy Drew will be out by the summer. Rob Zombie’s Halloween, promises not to be a remake or a sequel and will introduce Mike Myers to a whole new audience.

The movies of 2007 will inspire the costume choices of its fans and lead the trends of this Halloween season.

03. March 2012 · Comments Off on Problem-solving Success Tip: Communicate! Don’t Leave your Key Stakeholders Guessing · Categories: Management · Tags: , ,

We are generally not very good about keeping others informed about the progress we’re making, especially if there isn’t much. You’re more likely to get support and understanding if you get the word out honestly about what is and isn’t happening. As you start your problem-solving project, establish a communication plan and follow it. Specify who needs what information about your effort, when they need it and how you are going to provide it. Make the plan appropriate to your problem, the culture of your company and the individuals involved.

Different participants in the project will need different information. For example, the members of the problem-solving team need all the details about everything. Managers who want the problem solved but aren’t personally participating in the resolution generally need assurance that things are proceeding appropriately, or timely notification if they aren’t. They don’t want to guess or wade through a ton of detail to try to figure out how things stand. For them, regular status reports are generally sufficient. Nobody likes unpleasant surprises, so be sure to identify who needs to know what about the various bumps you’ll hit along road.

Once you’ve developed your communications plan, tell everyone involved what it is—-then do what you promise. It seems obvious, but this is a major failing in many projects. Make changes as necessary. If people know that they’re getting the information that they need when they need it, they won’t waste your time with status-check phone calls or emails. Your meetings will be shorter and easier to manage because you won’t have extra people coming just in case something comes up that they should know.
