28. November 2010 · Comments Off on The Political Tee Shirt to Make a Statement · Categories: Sweet Hungarian Paprika · Tags: , ,

What is it that is button-less, collarless, and pocket-less, with a round neck and short sleeves? What is perhaps the most comfortable and ubiquitous garment in the world? A Tee shirt that’s what! And what is it that makes a political statement, declares electoral allegiance and shows support for the candidature or other cause? A political tee shirt that’s what! Every time the elections roll around, there is a fresh innovation in the world of tee shirt design, and there is a slew of Graphic Tees, or funny tshirts with a political message that start gaining popularity instantly. Political tees can be used to make any kind of statement be it on the environment, democracy, freedom, war and peace or electoral candidate.

There is a whole lot of funny tshirts inspired by President George W Bush and not in a nice way I may add. So it is that you have a graphic tee of a diminutive Bush, with an elongated shadow behind him that of the evil character from Star Wars, Darth Vader, complete with brandished sword, with the caption Dubya Vader! Here’s another: Who would Jesus Bomb? The answer is just a picture of a silly smiling Bush.

Then there are those tees that declare you to be a conservative or a liberal: here is a really funny tee; I’d rather be a conservative nut job than a liberal with no nuts and no job. Or what about this one that claims to list the Top Ten Good Things About Liberals and then has a list with numbers 10 to 2 left blank, and the number 1 being They Die Eventually. Even though the message is a little hostile you can’t help but smile. And here is one that does not mince any words about what the wearer thinks about Liberals: I just neutered a cat. Now he’s a liberal. Then of course there are all of those Tees which declare to all and sundry who you are going to vote for in the next election.

Graphic tees can be used sometimes be used to make a serious political statement, say one relating to the environment: A stark black tee with a monochrome picture of planet Earth on it, bears the slogan There is no Planet B, an effective way to remind people that we need to take care of mother Earth it’s the only one we have! Another thought provoking one would be a plain tee with the drawing of a tree on in, only the branches of the tree look more like the human brain and the words Think Green printed on it compel you to think.

You must have surely heard a lot of people talking about the end of the world fast approaching with the doomsday being predicted to be coming in the year 2012. What exactly is the significance of planetary alignment 2012, you may ask. The answer lies in carefully studying the Mayan calendar. While there are many who may argue that the civilization existed too long ago, for the prediction to be taken seriously, there are certain other important aspects that you need to look into. For instance, while the prediction in itself may appear absurd, you should not forget that it is based on the movement of stars and planets. Planetary alignment 2012 is therefore, something that we do not have any control on.

One more factor that needs to be carefully considered is that the Mayans possessed supreme astronomical and mathematical skills. Not only did this knowledge help them create a calendar 3,500 years ago, it also helped them to create a complex mathematical calculator too. This unique calculator was used in conjunction with the planetary movements to arrive at the particular doomsday date by the ancient Mayans.

Planetary alignment 2012 assumes importance because of a unique lining up of planets during this day. It is predicted that the sun will lineup with the center of the Milky Way on 21/12/2012. This planetary alignment 2012 is something that an extremely rare occurrence. In fact, it is known to happen only once in 25,800 years. The ancient Mayans believed that these celestial events will have a direct impact on the lives of all living beings and that it will herald the beginning of a new age.

If anyone has had any experiences with mold then they will tell you it can be a huge problem and if you catch it in time it can be avoided. Many people do not realize how deadly black mold can be and how easily it can spread. Mold can travel by the means of attaching itself to our clothing, and just like a virus it can spread through the air. The bad thing is once mold starts to spread it is very difficult to keep it from spreading throughout any area including your home.

When entertaining, disposable dishes are hands down the number one creator of trash. Avoid using them, and you’ll cut your resulting landfill-bound waste by almost 100%!  Plastics #3, 6, and 7, of which most disposable dishware is made, are the most toxic plastics ever invented, and sadly, the most pervasive. Most of us, myself included until fairly recently, when faced with a crowd of people to feed, stroll blithely down the disposable aisle, grabbing a giant pack of sturdy Styrofoam plates, colorful plastic cups, and several boxes of forks, spoons, and knives. During the party, Uncle Joe throws his plate away, only to later decide he wants seconds, or dessert. Cousins Jane and John can’t remember whose cup was whose, so they throw away both and get another. As the party winds down, maybe you have one giant garbage can for all of the waste, or maybe several bags. Now imagine all the picnics and cookouts thrown around the world over the summer, and picture all those garbage cans and bags… the enormous volume of wasted landfill space. These plastics and styrenes never biodegrade. Ever. Worse yet, there is an accumulating body of evidence to suggest that the toxins from these plastics actually leech into the foods they contain!

Here are two solutions.

#1. If you’re not having an outdoor party, and your guests are mostly adults, go ahead and pull out that china that is forever gathering dust in your basement / attic / china cabinet! It’s not there for looking at, it’s there for being USED! Otherwise, why even have them? Sell them! Get some money! Use that storage space for something that you really need to own! You will be amazed at how enjoyable it is to actually see your food served on these beautiful pieces, and they make guests feel very honored. Yes, there may be some hand-washing involved afterwards, but believe me, the joy you’ll get from the use will far outweigh the chore. Trust me, Grandma Edna would WANT you to use it! From an eco-standpoint, this really is the ideal solution.
Don’t have “fine” china? I’m about to share one of my very favorite dirty little secrets with you. My “china” is solid white, with fine gold bands around the outside and inner rim of the dishes. I have large wine goblets and tall champagne flutes that are a heavy-weight glass (which feels like crystal) with a thick gold band around the rim. They were ALL end of season close-outs at an uber department store whose name rhymes with “smallbart.” The “china” came in boxes of 4 place settings each, for $11 a box. The goblets and flutes were $1 each. Seriously. Every single time I use them, my guests are guaranteed to make a comment about how incredible the table looks, and how gorgeous my china is, and “Oh, did you get that for your wedding?” Yep, sure did. *wink* It doesn’t have to be expensive to be beautiful. No one yet has tested to see whether the gold rims were 24 karat or metallic paint! Best of all, if something gets broken (and nothing has yet!), it’s hardly a catastrophe.

#2. If you throw a lot of wild parties and outdoor extravaganzas where porcelain / china is just not practical, there is another answer. While it does involve using plastic, it’s responsible usage, which is what we ideally need to get to for all plastics.   You can go to any department, drug, or grocery store and find those sets of hard plastic, melamine-style dishes. They come in all shapes, colors, and patterns, and generally have coordinating cutlery and serving dishes! For a cost of around $2 an item, you can put together a full complement of non-disposable plastics, most of which are even dish-washable. If you are not entertaining at home, bring a large extra cooler, and fill it about half way with water. Have guests scrape their plates into the trash, then put the dishes in the water to soak. When you’re closing up shop, give them a quick swish in the water to dislodge the remaining food, pack the dishes in a box or bag, and dump the dirty water. When you get home, run the dishes through the dishwasher, and you’re ready for the next round. An added bonus to the heavy plastic pieces is that because of their weight, they are much less prone to fly around when the wind blows than their paper and Styrofoam counterparts.

A note on style: I will say that when purchasing dishes, whether porcelain or plastic, I am a huge advocate of white. It can be used on every occasion, looks completely fabulous, and really shows off the food. If you go with white, you will only need the one set for all your events, and it’s much easier to replace if any pieces get broken or lost.

19. November 2010 · Comments Off on Wwdds? What Would Dorothy Day Say? · Categories: Religion · Tags: , ,

“Writing…is hard because you are giving yourself away, but if you love; you want to give yourself. You write as you are impelled to write, about man and his problems, his relation to God and his fellows…The sustained effort of writing, of putting [words down while] there are human beings [with] sickness, hunger, sorrow…I feel that I have done nothing well, but I did something.”-Dorothy Day

Dorothy Day lived a diverse 83 years that culminated in 1980. She spent her youth amongst anarchists and bohemians, in bars and through unhappy love affairs. She ended life with a mile high FBI file and a paper trail that testifies that what she wrote, she believed, she did and lived.

As an unwed mother she shocked her progressive friends when she entered the Roman Catholic Church, and from the inside, she began to critique it. She called herself a journalist, but she was also like St. Francis of Assisi, a lone prophetic voice of wisdom that challenged the corruption of the gospel/good news that Jesus said was non-negotiable for his follower’s; you must forgive to be forgiven and you must love-even those who do not love back.

In a 1994 issue of The Progressive, Erwin Knoll reported “the day after the Japanese attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor [was] a day when even the most committed pacifist might have been forgiven for maintaining a discreet silence…There was nothing discreet about Dorothy Day.”[1]

On the Sunday after Pearl Harbor, Day spoke out, “There is now all this patriotic indignation about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and Japanese expansionism in Asia. Yet not a word about American and European colonialism in this same area. We, the British, the French, and others set up spheres of influence…control national states-against the expressed will of these states-and represent imperialism…We dictate to [all] …to where they can expand economically and politically, and we declare what policy they must observe. From our nationalistic and imperialistic point of view, we have every right to concentrate American military forces [Everywhere we chose]…But I waste rhetoric on international politics-the breeding grounds of war over the centuries. The balance of power and other empty slogans inspired by a false and flamboyant nationalism have bred conflict throughout ‘civilized’ history.

“And it has become too late in human history to tolerate wars which none can win. Nor dare we quibble about just wars…All wars are, by their very nature, evil and destructive. It has become too late for civilized people to accept this evil. We must take a stand. We must renounce war as an instrument of policy…Evil enough when the finest of our youth perish in conflict and even the causes of these conflicts were soon lost to memory. Even more horrible today when cities go up in flames and brilliant scientific minds are searching out ultimate weapons.

“War must cease. There are no victories. The world can bear the burden no longer. Yes, we must make a stand. Even as I speak to you, I may be guilty of what some men call treason. But we must reject war: Yes, we must now make a stand. War is murder, rape, ruin, death; war can end our civilization. I tell you that within a decade we will have weapons capable of ending this world as we have known it.” [IBID]

Day’s prophetic voice is also a friend of wisdom and “Wisdom is a spirit intelligent, holy, unique, manifold, subtle, agile, clear, unstained, and certain. Not baneful, but loving the good, keen, unhampered, beneficent, kind, firm, secure, all-seeing and pervading all spirits. Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion and SHE penetrates and pervades all things by reason. SHE is the aura of the might of God and a pure effusion of the glory of The Almighty. SHE is the refulgence of eternal Light, a spotless mirror of the power of God. And SHE who is one, can do all things and renews everything. And passing into holy souls from age to age, SHE produces friends of God and prophets.” – WISDOM 7:22-8:1

Day took Jesus seriously and understood that for a Christian the higher law is God’s not man’s and for a Christian, God is love and “love is not the starving of whole populations. Love is not the bombardment of cities. Love is not killing…Our Manifesto is the Sermon on The Mount, which means we will try to be peacemakers.”

Day challenged church, state and corporate media via her publication The Catholic Worker, which gave voice to the voiceless and persists today. Everyday when I sit in front of my keyboard to write; to give myself away impelled by love in response to a sense of mission or is it duty? This need to write about man and his problems, his relation to God and his sisters and brothers, provokes me to daily wonder:

WWDDS?

What would Dorothy Day Say about America today, our media, government and churches? What would she publish about Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza, and the fact that 2008 is the 60th Anniversary of Israel, Nakba, and the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights upon which Israel’s statehood was contingent upon upholding.

Might she have said:

For every misunderstanding, every condemning thought, every negative vibration, every tear torn from a heart, every time one grabbed and wouldn’t let go, and they only did it because they did not know:

The Divine is within all creation and within all women and men.

And every tiny kindness you have ever done, every gentle word spoken, every time you held your tongue, every positive thought, every smile freely given, every helping hand that opens, helps bring in the kingdom. And the kingdom comes from above, and it comes from within.

Imagine a kingdom of sisterhood of all creatures and all men.

What kind of animals will you see at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland? Continued from Part 5

Johnston’s Freshwater Crocodile

The Johnston’s freshwater crocodile is equally as fast on land or water. They may gallop at speeds up to 18 miles per hour. They have powerful tails and strong legs. They are not generally dangerous to humans, but can inflict serious injury with their sharp teeth.

Laughing Kookaburra

The laughing kookaburra is Australia’s national symbol. It is about the size of a crow with short tail and a long, wide sharp bill. The call of the kookaburras is commonly used in movies to imitate the sound of monkeys in a jungle. They are approximately 45 cm in length and have a large head with a prominent brown eye and a very large bill.

Fly River Turtle: This aquatic turtle is the only freshwater turtle with flippers resembling those of marine turtles. The nose resembles that of a pig with nostrils at the front of a fleshy protruding snout. In Australia, their distribution is limited to northern Australia. They are also found in Irian Jaya and southern New Guinea. Habitat includes rivers, estuaries, lagoons, lakes, swamps, and pools.

Rainbow Lorikeets have blue on the head and belly, orange or red on the breast, green under the tail, back, and wings, and a red bill. With such a color combination you would think the Rainbow Lorikeet is easy to spot, but in their native habitat, lorikeets’ intense coloration is the perfect camouflage.

Snake-necked Turtle: Also known as the long-necked turtle has a neck so long that it can equal or exceed the length of its shell. This turtle is also known by the name of “the stinker” because of the skunk-like musk the turtle expels when threatened. In the wild the snake-neck turtle feeds on mollusks, crustaceans, tadpoles, and small fish.

Spiny-tailed Monitor also known as the ridge-tailed monitor, exists in a number of sizes and colors throughout northwestern Australia. The most notable characteristic of this species is the spiny tail shared by all members of the species regardless of size, origin or gender. The tail is useful in hunting as the lizard whips it around as a large spiky club to attack prey.

Zebra Finch is a beautiful little bird that resembles the large mammal for which it is named in that it has bright black and white “zebra” stripes along its body. The Aquarium houses only males of this species. The female is approximately the same in appearance with the exception of her striped chest, which is a soft grey color.

Amphibians

The most familiar amphibians are frogs, toads and salamanders. Amphibians are cold-blooded, smooth-skinned vertebrates that are capable of living both on land and in water.

American Bullfrog varies in color from brownish to shades of green and often with spots or blotches of a darker color on the back. Breeding males let out a deep bass jug-a-rum call that can be heard over a distance of more than half a mile.

The Blue Poison Dart Frog is a little frog easily recognized by their blue color that is generally darker on the limbs and belly and overlaid with black spots or patches especially on the head and back. The poison dart frog can release toxins from the skin that are distasteful and potentially lethal to predators. Three very toxic species of poison dart frogs from Columbia and South America are utilized by Indians to poison the tips of blowgun darts.

Birds

Birds are varied creatures inhabiting all parts of the world. The most unique defining feature of birds is “feathers.” All have wings and all but a few species fly.

Atlantic Puffin can be recognized by their large, triangular-shaped bill with red-orange tip and blue-gray base surrounded by yellow.

Other animals you can expect to see at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland include:

• Blue-gray tanager
• Scarlet ibis
• Sunbittern
• White-tailed Trogon
• Yellow-headed Amazon Parrot
• Banggai Cardinalfish
• Bonnethead shark
